3 Indicators of a Termite Infestation
Mar 30, 2023

Spring is here, and with it comes the risk of a termite infestation. According to the USDA, termites cause $40 billion in damage around the world annually. The key to termite removal is to notice them as soon as possible so you can call pest control services before the situation worsens. Here are a few signs that may mean your house is infested with termites.

1. Damage

One of the most obvious signs of a termite infestation is damaged wood in or on the structure. Termites consume the cellulose in all wood products. When this happens, they often leave behind small and round holes in the wood. Be sure to regularly check your floors, window frames, baseboards, and other wooden parts of your house.

Some damage isn't visible to the naked eye. Have you noticed that it's much more difficult to open and close your windows lately? By chewing through the wood in your house, termites can alter the shape and size of the wood around your windows. If your windows are suddenly stuck open or closed with no explanation, have local exterminators take a closer look. Ignoring these indicators of termites can lead to costly home repairs.

2. Mud Tubes

Mud tubes are tubes made of dirt and saliva and are made by termites to travel into and around your home safely. Mud tubes or shelter tubes can be on or in the structure, usually at or near the foundation, but can be on door and window framing, flooring, sill plate, band board, or floor joists to name a few. If you see mud tubes, your house may already be infested, so you should call a local exterminator right away.

3. Shedded Wings

Termites often swarm in the spring, usually following rainfall on a warm day. Often shed wings can be found after a swarm has occurred. If you find shed wings around your property, it's imperative that you act quickly and get a local exterminator to help you address the issue before the swarm grows beyond your control.

These are a few things that may be signs of a termite infestation. If you see any of these indicators, call Barrett Pest & Termite Services immediately for a free consultation. With over 110 years of combined experience, we have the knowledge and skills to take care of the pests in your home!
